Best romance novel I ever read. Hands down.The premise of the book involving Kat escaping from an institution and finding refuge with Lucien was the only reason I picked up the book and I found that interesting and decently played out. However, there were several little plots and characters that were not fleshed out so that when they were resolved it almost felt like going down a checklist to get to the end of the story. They probably could have been omitted so more space could be given to Kat and Lucien's developing relationship during

Chunky, clunky, on the nose kind of writing, the book reads more like an exposition dump than a novel. The story runs at an extremely odd pace, at once you think ok maybe not enough time is being spent on getting from point A to B in the character/relationship arc because, time/pace... on the other hand the first 30 odd pages (that, true to Kat's writing style read like an exposition dump) could have been condensed into a one para exposition dump. One of my favorites by this author. I like how Kathryn is strong enough to face censure from everyone when they find out about her studies into healing. The horrors of the madhouse portrayed are frightening.
I do really love it
Historical romance is no longer my favorite genre, but I have a ton of them and I have really enjoyed Kat Martin's Against the... series so I grabbed this as an escape from the murder and mayhem I usually read. Unfortunately, it did not measure up.
