Fine historical montage of early twentieth century Germany. Even finer when read in conjunction with the Sansom novels.Really disappointing, a disjoint mess of a book. Hated all the characters, the plot(s) went every which way, and just a slog to finish. I find myself finishing a few books for my Goodreads list that I probably would have given up on if not for Goodreads. This book is one of those I only finished for Goodreads. Still willing to try some other Deighton books, but this was a real dog in my opinion.
A stunning tour de force by Deighton, linking as a pre history of some of the characters of his earlier Game, Set, and Match. Incorporating factual history with his own fictional world I often refer to it when rereading the earlier series and the later continuations. His favourite subject of Airships take a starring role together with references to to the beginnings of the film industry in America, the film world being another favourite.
This is the story of the Harald Winter family of Germany. Harald marries an American, Veronica and they have two sons, Peter and Pauli three years younger. The writer really does a good job describing the lives of the German people through the loss of the first world war and the rise of Hitler and into the second world war. This book was great in that I learned things about German history I never knew. I am embarrassed to admit that I had no clue about some of these things. It's a decent story of two brothers living in tumultuous times. However, there are so many references to things I had no idea about, and no further explanation, that at times, it just lost me. Overall, I would recommend it because of what I've learned. But just prepare to google while you're reading.
