I told a friend that I was reading a Russian book and she said: "Oh they are all doom and gloom! Only read them when you want to have a big cry!" Well, there is osme truth to that. Classic Russian literature is not happy and cheerful which doesn't mean they aren't worth reading. However, Boris Akunin is not a classic Russian author. His books are light and amusing and fun too. We all know that 19th century (or early 20th century) nuns didn't travel around Russia solving mysteries and befriendingA good storyEnjoyed this mystery that evoked images from Dostoyevsky's Russia. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author. I recommend it.
Didn't enjoy this as much as the Erast Fandorin stories, and I somehow missed the first book in the Sister Pelagia series, but this was still entertaining. Funny, and as always with Akunin, you don't have a clue till very near the end who the real villain is.
Great read for waterways of the tsars cruiseIn preparing to visit the Kirilla monastery that sits on edge of White Lake, I read this amateur detective novel about a nun that goes undercover to investigate a mysterious black monk. Set in early 1900s Russia, this novel is a real find. A tv series on Sister Pelagia was filmed in part in this locale. I preferred this series over Akunin's Erast series (e.g., The White Queen) although it was a good read for Moscow and st Petersburg.
just as good as the best Fandorin novels. It oozes mystery, with layer after layer of plot and never a dull moment around. It is just a bit reactionary though
This second book in the Sister Pelagia series is a captivating mystery that kept me engaged to the very end, which was not at all what I had come to expect from the development of the story. I appreciate that Akunin has created a female protagonist who is intelligent and humble. For someone from a male-dominated society I think that is a particularly positive achievement. I hope that Akunin will write more Sister Pelagia tales. I would like to read them in Russian some day. I would agree with
I came to this as a big fan of Akunin, having enjoyed a couple of his Erast Fandorin mysteries, and wasn't disappointed with his new creation. Sister Pelagia is an intriguing character drawn with great depth and it's great to see such a strong female lead in a novel. Sent to succeed where three men had failed and finally solve the mystery of the dreaded Black Monk, Pelagia eventually gets to the heart of the manner after more than a few twists and turns. Hugely enjoyable, I look forward to
