Im a fan of McDermids Tony Hill / Carol Jordan books (and the tv series, Wire in the Blood); shes a smart writer who keeps her stories compelling and excellently-paced. One of the classiest psychological thriller writers Ive encountered.That said, for a McDermind book, Fever of the Bone starts a little staidly and never seems to achieve anything remarkable (beyond the authors very entertaining base-line which Im more than willing to read her books for) theres more departmental problems for

Ive long been a fan of Val McDermids books, and FEVER OF THE BONE certainly lives up to my expectations. Carol Jordan and Tony Hill are back, only this time, their professional partnership is in jeopardy thanks to the arrival of a new boss at Bradfield CID.The murders and mysteries in FEVER OF THE BONE will keep you turning the pages, as will the look into Tony Hills background. Big fan of this series but not this particular book. Very predictable, a few cases and some of Tony's past gets explored but it just does not grab like many of the much darker books that preceded it. Worth a look but then put away and forget.
Tony Hill has always believed he has the capacity to be as evil as those he profiles. He learns more about his past in this book, and that gives him more to self-analyze and possibly reassess himself. Through six books now, the author has developed this wonderful character. I really like him.Carol Jordan, on the other hand, perplexes me. She's a determined cop and leads her team well. Shes a staunch supporter of Tony's relationship with the police. Personally, she has problems. She's borderline
DCI Carol Jordan has a new boss, Chief Constable James Blake. Though he hasnt actually broken her team up yet, hes pretty plain about the fact that he thinks her squad is a waste of resources and they should be more of a general resource to the entire police force, oh, and he doesnt believe Tonys worth the money they pay him as they have police officers trained in profiling. I suspect hes a bit intimidated by Dr Tony Hill. Poor Carol, shell do what she can to keep her team together, its taken
